The smallest things can have the biggest impact. Few people understand this better than the creative minds at Disney, who have made wondrous entertainment from a shrunken perspective. One who understands it better than most is Robert “Bob” Olszewski, designer of countless astounding miniature figures. The two go well together, as you can see in the following samples from the spectacular Olszewski Disney Gallery of Light figurine series.
Snow White PokitPal
When you look at a picture of Olszewski’s illustration of Snow White, you’ll likely think that it seems cute enough. The same goes for the ivory carving in the back, depicting Disney’s first princess with her prince. What you may not realize from just a picture is that the container for both art pieces fits within a typical smartphone screen. The Snow White PokitPal is 2 1/2” in height, 1 5/8” in width, and just an inch in diameter. You can tuck this tiny hope chest into, well, your pocket.
Haunted Mansion Madame Leota
Did you think the stretching paintings of the Haunted Mansion’s notorious gallery were unusual? How about the diminutive Haunted Mansion Madame Leota Gallery of Light box, a prime example of Olszewski’s work? Nothing may seem unusual at a glance about this depiction of the manor’s infamous medium. As you look at the objects around her crystal ball, both grounded and floating, you start to realize that this is no flat image. Like his other Gallery of Light works, it’s a captivating three-dimensional masterpiece. Chilling, isn’t it?
Mickey Magic in the Stars
Another fabulous piece from Olszewski’s signature series is the Mickey Magic in the Stars Gallery of Light figure. This enchanting work is a carefully carved resin sculpture of Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, bending the whole universe to his whims. Note the elaborate details, like the carefully crafted lines in the waves and the grooves in the stones. If you can’t see them clearly, just flip the hidden leaf switch on the box’s bottom-right corner. It will activate LED lights that make the whole scene come to dazzling life, just like magic.
Pinocchio and Gepetto
The Pinocchio and Gepetto Gallery of Light figure is as intricate and gorgeous as any other of the artist’s miniature works. The three-dimensional sculpture is a painstaking recreation of the toymaker’s home, with the furniture and assorted knick-knacks. Most intriguing is the moment from the movie that Olszewski chose to depict in this form. In this scene, Gepetto, himself an artist, makes a toy boy with such tenderness and love that it becomes something more, something magical. There may be no piece more representative of the Olszewski Disney Gallery of Light series.
